315 kVA, 400 kVA and 500 kVA Transformers, How to Choose?
315 kVA, 400 kVA and 500 kVA transformers are with three capacity ratings that are very close to each other. Below table can help you make a wise choice depending on your actual demand and avoid capacity waste or deficiency.
How Many kW Can OMEK's 400 kVA Transformer Supply?
For typical industrial and commercial loads, the power factor (PF) is usually approximately 0.8.
kW = kVA × PF
Capacity | Usable Load (PF = 0.8) |
315 kVA | 252 kW |
400 kVA | 320 kW |
500 kVA | 400 kW |
As we can see, a 400 kVA transformer can supply 68 kW more usable power than 315 kVA. A 500 kVA transformer supplies 80 kW more usable power than 400 kVA.
You can calculate your total load and then make an appropriate decision.

Size & Weight
The weight and size of the transformer will increase as the capacity of the transformer increases.

FAQ
Have any questions? We’re here to help you out.
The current of 400 kVA transformer is related to its voltage levels and phases.
For a 3 phase transformer, the current is calculated like this:
Current (A) = kVA × 1000 ÷ (√3 × Voltage)
Here is a typical example:
For a 400 kVA, 11kV / 0.4kV transformer
The current of LV side (400V)≈ 577 A
The current of HV side (11kV)≈ 21 A
The actual current may vary depending on the efficiency.
The weight of an OMEK 400 kVA transformer varies according to its design and cooling method.
Dry-type: Approx. 1200-1500 kg
Oil-immersed: Approx. 1080-1635 kg
For OMEK 400 kVA transformers, the impedance voltage varies within 4%-6.5% due to different transformer designs and types.
If you want to know the exact impedance value of the transformer type you need, please contact us.
If you want to convert kVA into kW, remember this formula:
kW = kVA × Power Factor
The power factor is not a fixed value, but is determined by the characteristics of the load.
For example, if the power factor of a load is 0.8, then the real power=400 kVA × 0.8=320 kW
