What is an 11kV Transformer?
An 11 kV transformer refers to a transformer whose rated voltage includes the 11 kV side. It can serve as either the high-voltage side (e.g., 11/0.4 kV) or the low-voltage side (e.g., 33/11 kV).
However, in distribution applications, it most commonly refers to a distribution transformer used on the high-voltage side, stepping down from 11 kV to a lower distribution voltage level, such as 400 V or 230 V for direct supply to end users.

FAQs
Have any questions? We’re here to help you out.
There are distinct discrepancies between 11kV and 33kV power transformers in working voltage level and application scenario, etc.
| Comparison Item | 11kV Transformer | 33kV Transformer |
|---|---|---|
| Voltage Level | Medium low voltage grade | Medium high voltage grade |
| Application Scope | Urban & rural power distribution, factory power supply | Regional power transmission, main substation power conversion |
| Power Capacity | Small to medium capacity | Medium to large capacity |
| Installation Place | Indoor distribution room, box substation | Outdoor substation, remote power station |
| Cost & Size | Compact structure, lower cost | Bigger volume, higher manufacturing cost |
| Transmission Distance | Short distance power supply | Long distance power delivery |
We supply step down transformer 33kV to 11kV, covering mainstream specifications including 10 MVA 33 11kV transformer and 33 11kV transformer. Besides 33kv to 11kv transformer for voltage reduction, 11kv to 33kv transformer is also available to boost voltage for long-distance power transmission.
11kV transformers are mostly applied in regional distribution network, while 33kV series serve high-level power transmission and voltage conversion between two voltage classes.
When selecting a 11kV transformer, it is necessary to know the capacity, load characteristics, whether on-load voltage regulation is required, installation environment, short-circuit impedance and loss indicators.
If it is used for industrial loads, special attention should be paid to start-up impact, voltage fluctuations and long-term overload capacity.
If it is a distribution project, it is also necessary to confirm whether the 11 kV in the system is on the high-voltage side or the medium-voltage side, as this directly determines the required transformer voltage ratio.
For instance, a certain distribution substation reduces the 33 kV power grid to 11 kV, and then further reduces it from 11 kV to 0.4 kV for the use of equipment and lighting in the factory area. This two-level distribution is very common in many regions. Understanding the role of the 11kV network helps select the right transformer for actual power distribution requirements.
