FAQ
Have any questions? We’re here to help you out.
A dry type transformer is a basic type of power transformer. It does not use oil for insulation or cooling. Instead of being immersed in insulating oil, its core and windings are insulated and cooled by air. It is either natural air flow or forced-air ventilation. Solid insulation materials such as epoxy resin or varnish-impregnated paper are used to protect the windings and provide electrical insulation.
Dry type transformers have strong safety performance and environmental friendliness. A dry type transformer is widely used in locations with strict fire-safety and pollution-control requirements. For example, in factories, high-rise buildings, subways, airports, ports, and offshore facilities. In these settings, it is often combined with high- and low-voltage switchgear to use. They can form a compact indoor substation that is easy to install and maintain.
Dry type transformers and oil filled transformers have differences in safety, capacity and voltage range, maintenance needs, and applicable installation environments.
| Item | Dry Type Transformer | Oil-Filled Transformer |
| Insulation & Cooling Medium | Uses air and solid insulation (such as epoxy resin); operates without oil. | uses oil for insulation and cooling. |
| Safety & Environmental Impact | It is non‑flammable and does not leak, making it suitable for fire‑sensitive areas. | Possible oil leakage, fire, and explosion risks; requires oil pits and safety protection. |
| Capacity & Voltage Levels | Standard capacities reach up to 2,000–2,500 kVA, while voltage levels are usually below 10 kV; some models reach 35 kV. | Capacity ranges from very small to ultra-large; extra‑high voltages exceeding 1000 kV. |
| Overload & Heat Dissipation | Air cooling is less efficient; long-term overload capability is limited and depends on ventilation conditions. | excellent cooling performance, manage overload effectively, withstands intense short‑circuit forces |
| Initial Cost & Maintenance | Although the purchase price is higher, it eliminates oil testing and replacement and simplifies daily upkeep. | The oil‑filled option is cheaper up front but requires regular oil testing and higher ongoing maintenance. |
| Installation & Space | installed indoors near the load without oil pits. | requires a transformer room or outdoor oil containment. |
| Noise & Environmental Adaptability | Choose dry‑type for indoor, people‑intensive sites where oil pits or fire‑separation rooms are impractical | choose oil‑filled for outdoor, humid or harsh environments that require greater moisture tolerance. |
If used properly, a dry-type transformer can last for 25 to 30 years. The exact duration depends on several factors: the temperature during operation of the equipment, the size of the load it carries, the humidity of the environment, and whether regular maintenance is carried out.
If you keep your transformer cool and operate within the rated load range, and conduct regular inspections and maintenance, it can be used even longer.
A dry type transformer is made up of several components. These are core, windings, support structure, accessories, and an enclosure.
The core can be stacked steel or amorphous alloy. The copper or aluminum windings handle voltage conversion. Epoxy, varnish, pads, clamps and bolts insulate and secure the windings and core. Other accessories are cooling vents, fans, sensors, terminals, and protective casing ensure safe operation and easy monitoring.
Transformers of different kVA ratings have corresponding sizes. Here are the sizes for various kVA models in our Amorphous Alloy Series.

Dry type transformers require minimal maintenance. But essential maintenance should be conducted. It should be focusing on temperature control, dust and moisture prevention, and tight connections.
Key daily maintenance points:
OMEK experts recommend that regularly check thermostats and room thermometers. If you find the temperature rises, it’s time to inspect the load and cooling fans.
Use dry compressed air from the bottom up to remove dust from coils and the core, and ensure adequate ventilation to prevent moisture and corrosive gases.
Listen for unusual sounds or odors during operation and investigate any that occur immediately.
A cast resin transformer is a dry-type transformer. Dry type transformer refers to any transformer that does not rely on insulating liquid (e.g., oil). Among various dry-type technologies, the cast resin design is characterized by its unique construction. The windings are completely cast in a solid epoxy resin block under vacuum. Providing superior environmental protection and mechanical strength. Other dry-type designs, like vacuum pressure impregnated (VPI) transformers, use different insulation methods.
