500 kVA, 630 kVA and 800 kVA — Which One Should I Choose?
Among the common capacities of transformers, 500 kVA, 630 kVA and 800 kVA are three close values. You might hesitate and don’t know how to make the right decision. Here is the comparison among the three capacities of OMEK transformers.
- Comparision
Parameter | 500 kVA Transformer | 630 kVA Transformer | 800 kVA Transformer |
Rated Capacity | 500 kVA | 630 kVA | 800 kVA |
Recommended Continuous Load | ≤ 400 kVA | ≤ 500 kVA | ≤ 650 kVA |
Typical Load Rate | 75–90% | 70–80% | 60–80% |
Initial Cost | Lowest | Medium | Highest |
Size & Weight | Small | Medium | Large |
Future Expansion Margin | Limited | Moderate | High |
Here’s a simple way to calculate the capacity you need:
Required Capacity (kVA) = Total load (kW) × 1.25
For example, if your total load is 450 kW,
450 kW×1.25=562.5 kVA
So, the best choice is 630 kVA transformer.
Applications
A 630 kVA transformer is a widely used capacity for power distribution. It meets industrial electricity needs and offers strong versatility. It plays a significant role in different sectors of our society.

FAQ

The 630 kVA transformer is a distribution equipment with a rated capacity of 630 kVA. kVA is the abbreviation for kilovolt-ampere, which is the unit of apparent power. Its main function is to change voltage, transmit and distribute electrical energy. Its most common function is to convert high-voltage electricity into low-voltage electricity for daily use. It is often installed in places with medium electricity consumption to supply stable power.
No-load loss is a fundamental type of loss for a transformer. It is part of the power dissipated by 630 kVA transformer. The no-load losses of different transformers are different.
No-load loss refers to the electrical energy loss generated when the transformer is connected to the rated voltage and the secondary side is in an open-circuit state, that is, without any electrical equipment attached. This loss mainly comes from the hysteresis loss and eddy current loss of the core.
As long as the transformer is powered on, no matter if it carries loads or not, this part of loss will remain stable. The extent of the loss is closely related to the material and manufacturing process of the core. Cores made of better material have lower no load loss.
The size of a 630 kVA transformer is not a fixed value. It mainly depends on whether it is an oil-immersed type or a dry type, the specific model, and the design of the manufacturer. If you want to know the size of the transformer you need, please contact us.
We usually calculate the short-circuit current based on the short-circuit impedance of the transformer. The short-circuit current of a single-phase transformer is typically 25 to 50 times the rated current, while that of a three-phase transformer is usually 10 to 25 times the rated current.
Load capacity is different from rated capacity.
Rated Capacity is a fixed value set by the manufacturer, for example, the rated capacity of a 630 kVA transformer is exactly 630 kVA. It is the maximum capacity that the equipment can operate stably for a long time under ideal conditions, and the value remains unchanged.
Load Capacity shows how much load the transformer can actually handle. It is dynamic and can be affected by actual working conditions. When the environment has good ventilation, low temperature, or is operated for a short period of time, the load capacity can be slightly higher than the rated capacity (for example, a short-term overload of 10% to 20%); when the environment temperature is high, the heat dissipation is poor, or there are loads with low power factor, the load capacity can be lower than the rated capacity.
A 630 kVA transformer with feeder pillar refers to an integrated outdoor power distribution unit that combines a 630 kVA voltage-transforming transformer and a feeder pillar (low-voltage distribution cabinet). It is a common power supply setup for medium-sized electricity consumers such as residential communities, small factories, and commercial streets.
Feeder Pillar is a metal-enclosed low-voltage distribution cabinet installed at the secondary side of the transformer. It contains circuit breakers, isolating switches, electricity meters, protection relays, and busbars inside.
